Suburban Origami - Running time: 3:49 |
In this performance, soJin Chun conceptualizes high-rise buildings in the downtown core of Toronto by creating large-scale origami of boxes and stacking them in various configurations. By placing these colourful boxes in an alleyway in Scarborough, a Suburb of Toronto, the artist is disrupting the hierarchy of power that exists in urban planning. This project reclaims an alternative suburban space in order to bring art into a non-traditional context. |
This video was commissioned by the Latino Canadian Cultural Association as part of the Fraction/Memory project curated by Rita Kamacho. Artists of diverse disciplines were invited to create a performance art piece in various public locations around the city of Toronto. Each artist chose a place in the city loaded with personal and social memory. This project was funded by the Ontario Arts Council. |
